Travelling safely in South Africa

Posted on May 8, 2020 at 11:32 am

Many people worry about their safety when travelling abroad on holiday especially if you are holidaying in a country outside Europe however the good news is that travelling in South Africa is safe if you are careful and do not take unnecessary risks.

It is always better to travel with another person if possible so if you have gone on holiday alone it is sometimes possible to link up with someone else travelling alone for parts of your journey. As long as you travel on public transport there should not be a problem.

You will need to be particularly careful about your belongings especially if you venture into the markets or towns where you may fall prey to pickpockets. It is sensible to only carry a small amount of currency with you and to use a pre-paid card for purchases in hotels etc. If you hire a car so that you can explore the area check with the tourist board which areas are safe to travel to and make sure that any valuables such as cameras and mobile devices are stored out of sight.

As long as you stay aware and take sensible precautions your travel in South Africa should be incident free.

Keeping safe on your holiday to South Africa

Posted on March 13, 2020 at 10:34 am

A holiday to South Africa is for many a once in a lifetime experience and as such should be planned carefully so that lifelong memories are made, and negative outcomes are avoided as much as possible. Before you embark on your trip, check which vaccinations are required four to six weeks before the date of travel so that you are prepared.

Safety on your trip is paramount and so expert guidance needs to be followed before and during your trip. Embarking on a guided trip, especially if it is your first visit to South Africa is probably a wise move and will give you the reassurance you need so that you can relax and enjoy your experience.

It is important to stay within the confines of your resort unless it is safe to do so. Remember that you will be unfamiliar with the locality and so will not be aware of any places that may not be safe for tourists. Again, guided tours of local markets and tourist attractions are the best way to see the local area safely.

Think carefully about carrying large sums of money on your person and instead use a credit card for purchases where possible. Most hotels and bars or restaurants offer this method of payment.

Planning a trip to South Africa – don’t forget to try the food

Posted on November 14, 2019 at 2:14 pm

If you have a holiday booked to go to South Africa then you may of chosen the location because you wanted to go on safari. Although South Africa is the perfect place for a safari, it also has a great culture.

One thing you should do is take some time to try the local cuisine. If you fancy trying a local snack, then why not have a Biltong. Biltong is a dry cured meat which is thinly sliced. It is very similar to beef jerky. Vetkoek, which means Fat Cake, is a Ball of dough which is filled and fried. It is very popular in South Africa and can be either savoury or sweet. Popular fillings include apricot jam and spiced mince and grated cheese.

Boerewor is a sausage like meat that is usually made from a mixture of beef and pork spiced with coriander. It comes in a wheel like spiral and can be eaten on its own or in a bap.

Some people will not try local food when on holiday often because of the worry of becoming ill, but if you don’t have any allergies to the food and eat from places that are hygienic you should be ok. If you do get ill often it is just from the richness of the food rather than food poisoning.

South African family holiday activities

Posted on August 23, 2019 at 10:50 am

When going on a family holiday you may have a wide range of ages- from the very young toddler to the older grandparents. It can be hard trying to find something that you can all do together and that everyone will enjoy.

If you are planning a trip to South Africa and have never been before, then you may want to spend some time researching the local areas to find out what is nearby and what activities you may want to do as a family. It may be that your main reason for going to South Africa is so that you can go on a safari trip. If this is the case then this may take up most of your time. When planning your safari, make sure that it is suitable for all the ages of people in your group. You may even decide to split your group in to two so that some of you can do one activity whilst others do something else.

Have a look at what beaches are nearby and what areas there are for the kids to enjoy. If you have very young children, they may not enjoy the safari trip as much as you so it might be quite nice to spend the rest of the holiday taking part in activities aimed at their age group.
